How does Social Backup & Recovery work?

Social Backup & Recovery (Beta) is a feature whereby a user who loses their private keys can record and share an encrypted video file of themselves with their federation guardians.

The guardians can then use this video to verify the user's identity and help them recover their federation wallet balance.

Backing up and recovering

Social Recovery is made up of two components - backup and recovery.

• Backup: To perform a social backup, navigate to Settings (the gear icon at the top right of the Home screen) > tap "Backup your wallet" > "Start social backup" > "Next." You will then be prompted to record a video saying the word "Fedi!" 
  • After you've recorded and reviewed your backup video to ensure that you can be clearly seen and heard, tap "Confirm backup video," and an encrypted file will be created. Tap "Save file" to download it, and be sure to save the file securely. Lastly, tap "Complete," and you're done!
• Recovery: To perform a social recovery, tap "I am a returning member" from the start page and select the "Start social recovery" option. Next, tap "Search files" to browse your computer for the encrypted file of the video you recorded and downloaded originally titled "backup.fedi."
