What is a federation?

A federation is a set of fedimint servers managed by individuals called guardians and working collaboratively to run the Fedimint protocol. Though configurations can vary, each server is typically run by an independent guardian of the federation.

The guardians keep the servers running by ensuring they are connected to power and to the internet. If one server stops running, the federation can persist with a reduced set until the server in question is restarted by its respective guardian, making the system resilient.

By enabling federated custody, federations provide a decentralized way for communities to share value and information while safeguarding each user's autonomy.
