What is a guardian?

A guardian is an individual or entity responsible for running a fedimint server for a federation. By running their respective servers, guardians work together to secure federation resources and can help members recover assets.

The guardians support their community federations in several ways:

• Onboarding – After a federation is set up, guardians invite the first members by sharing an invitation code.
• Custody – The fedimint servers generate a private key that can be backed up by the guardians to ensure the community’s resources are not lost if there is an issue.
• Recovery – Guardians can help federation members who lose their keys to recover their assets on a platform like Fedi, which offers an innovative Social Recovery (Beta) feature.
