What is Fedimint?

Fedimint is a modular, open-source protocol built on a strong foundation of privacy and security that allows individuals to custody & transact bitcoin in a community context. It does this by enabling the creation of federated mints (known as federations), which is where the protocol gets its name.

These organizations are "federated" in the sense that they are collaboratively run by a distributed group of individuals (known as guardians) that act as custodians. They are "mints" in the sense that they mint (or create) eCash in an equivalent amount to the bitcoin deposited into the federation by its users.

This eCash can then be used by members of the federation to transact privately with one another in a way where even the guardians cannot know the identities of the transacting parties. You can learn more about the Fedimint protocol and how it works at fedimint.org.
