What is a guardian?

A guardian is an individual or entity that runs a fedimint server as part of a federation. By running their respective servers, guardians act as custodians – collaboratively securing the federation's assets for its users and ensuring its continued operation. Guardians support their federations in several ways:

• Custody – The fedimint servers generate private keys that can be backed up by the guardians to ensure the federation's resources are not lost and can be recovered if there is an issue.
• Inviting Members – After a federation is set up, guardians invite members by sharing an invitation code, which Fedi users can scan or paste into the app to join the federation and receive a wallet.
• Recovery – Guardians can help federation members who lose their seed phrase to recover their wallet via Social Recovery, an innovative feature (currently in Beta) available for select federations.
